who reaches through the shredding the dreadful denuding
who thrusts away the demon embedded entrenching
who catches the sun and brings it to the cave
tell me, girl, who

who holds you when light has gone
who touches you when nothing remains
who sings to you when the hour breaks faith
who, tell me, girl, who

who will cleave you as they deceive you
who will cover you as they unclothe you
who will raise you as they inter you
who, my sweet girl, who

you covered yourself in betrayed cloth
you held, and seized your inviolate fire
you stood up and you walked to the hut

to the police station
to the hospital
to the court

it was you and you simply said
i shall not be erased

may 12, 2017. for bilkis bano. she was massacred during riots in 2002. she fought back, and demanded justice. refused to let anything make her break or give up. i have watched her interview on tv, stirs me every time i remember her calm smile and her determination, her child born after the gang rape and murders was with her, so was her husband.
